America is famous for worshipping youth culture, but the era of the mature woman may finally have arrived.

The dark comedy "Desperate Housewives" is a mainstay of American television, showing women in their 40s looking great and pursuing fun and romance. Women over 30 are doing more (and hotter) modeling. Women who have a little life experience and seasoned curves are even appearing more often as Playboy Playmates. The girl next door? The woman next door!

As an example of this trend, we submit for your consideration Robin Fleming, a fetching Floridian who is the Encore Pageant Apparel Model of the Year for 2006. She's neither desperate nor a Playmate, but she is a fortyish woman, and in October 2005 she triumphed over a bevy of girls to win her title.

Her opponents were not just any girls. Some were former titleholders from the Miss USA and National Teenager systems. These were cute girls, sexy girls, head-turners and heartbreakers. And Ms. Fleming -- whose previous achievements included placing as third-runner-up at Mrs. Internation -- beat them on their own beautiful turf. Her philosophy is "Achieve Your Dream," and she is just starting to dream.

Will women make girls obsolete? No. But the glory of it is that girls will not make women obsolete, either. Robin Fleming is proof that young girls should never fear the future. There's no reason it can't be beautiful.
